Figure 18. The chronic inflammation in this case is primarily between the villi (intervillous), and is called chronic intervillositis. This pattern is more common in preterm chronic placental inflammation. Either chronic villitis or chronic intervillositis can be caused by infectious agents, or can be "nonspecific", and either pattern can recur. I have found chronic intervillositis to be more common in patients with chronic placental inflammation and recurrent early pregnancy loss. |
